City of Akron + Summit County Dual Permitting

Inside Akron city limits, solar PV and battery storage need two coordinated steps: approval from the City of Akron Plans & Permits Center and a permit from the County of Summit Department of Building Standards. You may apply concurrently, but County permit issuance is contingent on City approval. The City publishes a Residential Solar PV Permit Checklist and a Commercial/Non-Residential checklist.

Per the City’s residential checklist (as posted): City application fee $50 with review that can take up to 14 days; Summit plan-review fee $32.30 and permit issuance fee $108.05 with a stated 5-day review. Summit requires a site plan, electrical diagram, and a structural engineer statement that the roof can sustain the added weight. Schedule Summit electrical and final inspections at (330) 630-7280. Historic properties or historic districts need additional Certificate of Appropriateness steps before install.

The City also notes that accessory-use solar is a by-right use in most areas — meaning most residential projects do not need a special zoning variance beyond the approval and permit process above. Fee figures and review clocks can change; confirm on current City/County materials. After local approval, Ohio Edison / FirstEnergy interconnection is still required.

HOAs and Condos in Summit County

Ohio Revised Code 5312.16 (planned communities) and 5311.192 (condominiums) limit how associations can restrict solar energy collection devices. Unless the recorded declaration specifically prohibits them, owners may generally install subject to reasonable size, place, and manner rules.
