Ohio Edison / FirstEnergy — Same Utility Family, Stark Geography

Canton and most of Stark County take delivery from Ohio Edison, the same FirstEnergy Ohio distribution company that serves Akron. Confirm the name on your bill. FirstEnergy’s shared Ohio Retail Interconnection materials apply — Level 1 for most residential inverter-based systems ≤ 25 kW (published Level 1 application fee $50), with site plan and one-line diagram requirements.

What changes from an Akron job is usually the building permit path, not the utility brand. FirstEnergy’s FAQ states there is currently no company-sponsored rebate for customer-owned self-generation. City of Canton Building Department — Not Stark Dual-Stack

Inside City of Canton limits, permits run through the City’s own Building / Code Department at 424 Market Avenue N, 3rd Floor ((330) 430-7800; BuildingCode@cantonohio.gov). This is not the Akron model: Stark County Building Inspection does not issue City of Canton building permits. Canton, Massillon, North Canton, and Canal Fulton maintain their own building departments; Stark County covers townships and certain contract villages.

As of October 1, 2025, Canton uses an iWorQ citizen portal for searching permits, submitting applications, scheduling inspections, and paying invoices. Permits created before that date may require a phone call to the Building Department. The City enforces the Residential Code of Ohio (2019 edition with amendments effective April 15, 2024) and the 2024 Ohio Building Code. Zoning permits, when required, must be obtained before a building permit is issued. Home-improvement and trade licensing with the City is separate from electric/HVAC licensing.

Canton does not currently publish a dedicated “solar PV checklist” page like Akron’s Going Solar hub. Treat rooftop solar as a permitted alteration/electrical scope under the Building Department’s general rules and confirm document requirements when you apply. Outside city limits, confirm whether Stark County Building Inspection plus township zoning apply. After local approval, Ohio Edison / FirstEnergy interconnection is still required.

HOAs and Condos in Stark County

Ohio Revised Code 5312.16 (planned communities) and 5311.192 (condominiums) limit how associations can restrict solar energy collection devices.
