What Solar Panel Cost Usually Includes

A complete residential quote is more than the panels:

Solar modules, inverter(s), racking, and wiring
Labor and installation
Electrical work at the home, if the panel or service needs upgrades
Local permits and inspections (fees vary by city or county)
Utility interconnection and metering, when the utility charges those items

Roof replacement is a separate decision when the roof will not outlast the array. We do not hide that in a “per watt” headline.

System Price and What You Pay Are Not Always the Same

Cash is the equipment-and-install price for a system you own.

Loan spreads that owned-system cost over time. Interest and term change the monthly payment. The hardware price is still the starting point.

PPA is a Power Purchase Agreement: you typically pay for the power the system produces rather than buying the hardware outright. Availability depends on utility, credit, and current programs. Details: solar PPA in Ohio.

Propel is prepaid third-party ownership. The amount you pay up front is a prepaid structure, not automatically the same number as a cash equipment quote.

Utility Costs Are Part of the Picture

Interconnection and metering are not optional if the system runs in parallel with the grid. On AEP Ohio, current application materials list a $50 application fee for inverter-based export of 25 kW or less, and a typical $319 residential dual-register meter charge when the customer pays actual meter cost. Those figures can change, and other utilities have their own processes.

Federal Tax Credit Status for 2026

The IRS Residential Clean Energy Credit (section 25D) equals 30% of qualified costs for eligible property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025. The IRS states the credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Unused credit from a prior year may still be carried forward on Form 5695. Is there still a 30% federal solar tax credit?

Does Ohio have a statewide solar rebate?
