Do Solar Panels Work When the Power Is Out?
For a typical grid-tied home system: no usable house power during a utility outage, even at noon on a clear day. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that residential solar systems generally depend on the electrical grid — and, for safety reasons, they are designed to switch off if grid power cuts out.
That shutdown stops the inverter from feeding electricity onto lines that utility crews may be repairing. It is a core safety behavior of ordinary grid-tied equipment, not a defect.
What You Need for Backup Power
DOE’s resilience guidance is plain: for solar panels to produce power on their own during an outage, you need a properly configured inverter and a storage system (such as a battery) that can keep power steady as loads and solar output change. In practice that means an islanding-capable design — often a hybrid or backup-capable inverter, automatic isolation from the utility, and a critical-loads or backed-up panel.
- Essential-load backup — selected circuits (lights, fridge, internet, medical devices).
- Partial-home backup — more circuits, still sheds large loads when capacity is tight.

Ohio Storms, Ice, and Realistic Expectations
Ohio sees wind, thunderstorms, ice, and utility work that can cause outages. Backup goals should match how long you care about staying online and which loads matter — not a marketing promise of “unlimited power.” On sunny days, a correctly designed solar-plus-storage system can recharge the battery; cloudy stretches, night, and snow cover still limit recharge.
