How Many Solar Panels Do I Need in Ohio?

The Panel-Count Formula

Once you have a target system size in watts, panel quantity is arithmetic:

Number of panels ≈ system size (watts) ÷ watts per panel

Example method only (use your numbers): a 8,000 W (8 kW) target using 400 W modules is 8,000 ÷ 400 = 20 panels. Change the wattage and the count changes. Round up when a fraction remains, then confirm the roof can actually hold that layout.

Get the kW first from annual usage on the solar system size calculator. Savings dollars are a different problem — use the Ohio solar savings calculator for the input list, then upload a bill. There is no single statewide “Ohio homes need X panels” number, and panel count alone is not a savings figure.

Ohio Roof Space and Layout Reality

Panel count that fits on paper still has to fit fire setbacks, hips and valleys, vents, chimneys, and shade. A south plane with clear sun usually carries more useful kilowatt-hours than the same count on a heavily shaded slope.

Older consumer guides (including NREL material cited by OSU Ohioline) sometimes used an order-of-magnitude footprint such as about 100 square feet per kW. Treat that as historical planning color, not a measurement of your house. Higher-wattage modules, racking, and local code setbacks change the real footprint. We verify usable area on site.

  • Orientation. South / near-south is typically preferred; east-west is common when that is the roof you have. Production still belongs in PVWatts, not in a panel-count slogan.
  • Winter and shade. Ohio winters reduce output; trees reduce it year-round. Extra panels cannot fix a roof that never sees sun.
  • Roof age. An array should not go on a roof that needs replacement first. Time reroof with the project when that is the honest sequence.
  • Ground mount. If the roof is small or shaded, a ground array is a different layout conversation — still sized from kWh, still subject to utility and local rules.

  1. Total annual kWh (bill or utility history).

  3. Divide watts by module wattage (this page).

Is there a standard number of panels for Ohio houses?

No. Count follows your kWh, the module wattage, and usable roof. Two neighbors can need very different arrays.

Will more panels always mean more savings?

Not automatically. Extra nameplate on a shaded plane, or a system that dumps exports at a generation-only credit, can add cost without adding useful offset. Estimate energy first; dollars only after the tariff. See the savings methodology page.

Do I need a battery to choose a panel count?
