There is no honest statewide yes. A high electric bill on a clear south-facing roof in AEP Ohio territory is a different case than a heavily shaded house with a roof that needs replacement next year, or a homeowner who plans to move in six months.

Worth-it is the gap between what you pay for solar (cash, loan, PPA, or Propel) and what you would keep paying the utility — after export rules, remaining delivery charges, and how long you stay in the house.
Decision Framework: What Actually Changes the Math
- Current electric bill and annual kWh. Low usage shrinks the room for solar to offset.
- Utility and rate. AEP Ohio, Duke Energy Ohio, AES Ohio, Ohio Edison, and municipal systems (including Columbus Division of Power) do not credit exports the same way. AEP homeowners: start with AEP Ohio solar and AEP Ohio net metering.
- Electricity rate structure. Generation vs distribution vs riders. Solar often cuts energy you buy; it does not automatically erase every line item.
- Roof orientation, shade, and age. Production follows sun and shade. A roof near the end of its life should be a roof decision first.
- System cost and expected production. Size, equipment, electrical upgrades, permits, and interconnection all sit in the quote.
- Net-metering / export rules. Credits may be generation-energy only, not full retail. CRES shopping can change export treatment.

- How long you expect to live there. A long third-party contract on a house you will sell next year is a different question than a cash system on a home you plan to keep.

When Solar May Make a Lot of Sense
- A sizable, consistent electric bill and enough annual kWh to size a useful array
- A roof with decent sun, limited shade, and years of remaining life — or a planned reroof timed with the array
- A utility interconnection and export rule you can actually live with
- A payment structure (cash, loan, PPA, or Propel) whose cash flow you understand
- You expect to stay long enough for the contract or payback path to matter

When Solar May Not Make Sense
- Heavy shade that production cannot overcome at a reasonable size
- Very low electric usage, so the array would be tiny or the fixed costs would dominate
- A poor roof that needs replacement before it can carry an array
- A financing structure with poor economics for this usage and utility — including a PPA rate or loan that does not beat continued utility cost after real export rules
- Plans to move immediately, especially if a third-party contract is hard to transfer
- You need whole-home backup and are not prepared for battery cost and design, but were sold solar as if it kept the lights on in an outage

A Practical Path to an Answer

Step 2 — Identify your utility. The name on the bill (AEP Ohio vs Columbus Division of Power, for example) changes interconnection and credits.
Step 3 — Evaluate your roof. Direction, shade, age, and remaining life. The U.S. Department of Energy’s homeowner guide puts roof suitability before a purchase decision.
Step 4 — Estimate solar production. Size follows usage and roof, not a generic kit. Utility export caps (AEP Ohio’s 120% rolling-year NEMS note is one example) also matter.
Step 5 — Compare financing structures. Cash, loan, PPA, and Propel answer different cash-flow questions. None is automatically best.
Step 6 — Compare solar cost versus continued utility cost. Include remaining distribution charges, not only a solar-rate-versus-full-bill slogan. Then decide.

Are solar panels worth it in Ohio in 2026?
They can be, for the right bill, roof, utility, and payment path. They are not worth it for every house, especially after the homeowner 30% credit ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
Is solar a good investment if I might sell?
Owned systems often convey with the home. PPAs and prepaid TPO usually need a buyer who can assume the contract. If a sale is imminent, say so before anyone designs a long contract path.
Do I need a battery for solar to be worth it?
No. Most Ohio grid-tied arrays are sized for bill offset, not backup. Add a battery if outage backup is a real goal — and budget for it separately.
