Solar Batteries in Ohio

What a Home Battery Does

A battery stores electrical energy so you can use it after the sun drops or the grid goes out. The U.S. Department of Energy’s solar-and-resilience explainer is blunt: residential solar panels alone are not enough to make a home resilient, because solar systems generally depend on the grid and are designed to switch off if grid power cuts out.

For panels to power the house during an outage, you need a properly configured inverter and a storage system. The battery holds energy; the inverter converts it to the alternating current your outlets use.

Not every solar customer needs a battery. If the goal is bill offset on a stable grid, solar-only is the usual design. Add storage when backup, time-shifting, or a specific resilience goal is real — and budget for it as its own decision.

kW vs kWh, in Plain English

Kilowatts (kW) are power — how hard the system can push at a moment in time. A battery’s power rating is the size of the pipe. A 5 kW battery output cannot run a 10 kW surge of loads at once, even if the tank still has energy in it.

Kilowatt-hours (kWh) are energy — how much is in the tank. A 10 kWh battery could theoretically supply 5 kW for about two hours, or 1 kW for about ten hours, before it is empty (real usable energy is less than the nameplate, and loads are not that tidy).

Duration is how long selected loads can run. It is not “the whole house, forever.” Heavy loads (HVAC, well pumps, electric ranges, EV chargers) empty a battery fast. Essential-load backup (refrigerator, some lights, modem, a few outlets) lasts longer than whole-home backup on the same tank.

Battery pricing varies significantly based on storage capacity, power output, inverter configuration, electrical work, and whether storage is added to a new or existing solar system. We price the battery configuration designed for your actual backup goals.

Essential, Partial-Home, and Whole-Home Backup

Essential-load backup puts a critical-loads panel on a subset of circuits. That is the most common residential design.

Partial-home backup covers more circuits but still sheds big appliances during an outage.

Whole-home backup tries to cover the main panel. It needs enough kW to start motors, enough kWh for the outage length you care about, and usually a larger (or stacked) battery. It still will not run every appliance indefinitely.

During a long outage, solar can recharge a battery on sunny days if the inverter is designed for that. Cloudy stretches, snow, and night still limit recharge. Plan for hours or a couple of days of selected loads, not an unlimited generator substitute.

Generators vs Batteries, Solar-Only vs Solar + Battery

DOE notes that sunlight-generated electricity can be stored and discharged without fuel deliveries, unlike a typical diesel or gas generator. Generators can run large loads for as long as you have fuel and maintenance; they are noisy, need refueling, and have their own safety rules.

Batteries are quiet, automatic, and limited by capacity. Many homes that want backup use one or the other; some use both. Neither replaces a thoughtful load list.

Solar-only offsets daytime use and, with net metering, can credit exports. It does not keep the lights on when the utility is down. Solar + battery can do both bill offset and backup if it is designed and interconnected for that. AEP Ohio interconnection still applies to energy storage that operates in parallel with its system.

Ohio Outages, Warranties, and Installation

Ohio storms, ice, and utility work cause outages. Outage frequency varies by neighborhood and utility circuit. If backup power is one of your main reasons for considering a battery, tell us when requesting a quote because it directly affects the equipment and system design.

Battery warranties are product-specific (years, cycle counts, or retained capacity). Lifespan is not infinite. We use the manufacturer sheet on the equipment actually proposed.

Installation can need a dedicated wall or floor location, working space, and electrical upgrades. Storage that runs in parallel with the grid needs utility review. Will solar keep my house on during an outage?

Usually not, unless a battery (and the right inverter) is part of a design approved for backup. Standard grid-tied inverters shut down so they cannot back-feed lines.

Does every solar customer need a battery?

No. Buy a battery for backup or a specific energy-shifting goal, not because a quote bundled one by default.

Can a battery run the air conditioner for days?

Often no, not on a typical residential battery. HVAC is a large load. We size from the loads you actually want covered.
